LAZĂR ȘĂINEANU AND THE MODERN UNDERSTANDING OF PHRASEOLOGY AS A LINGUISTIC TERM

Rezumat

In this article, I aim at proving that Lazăr Șăineanu, in several texts from 1887, used the term frazeologie (‘phraseology’) in a modern, linguistically specialized sense, referring to the inventory of phraseologisms belonging to a historical language (such as Romanian, Spanish, etc.). Moreover, it is worth noting that the same linguist also used the terms locuțiuni (‘set phrases’) and expresii idiomatice (‘idioms’) at that time to indicate the units included in the sphere of “idiomatic phraseology” or “particular phraseology” (as he called this part of the language).
